St Mary’s Secondary school choir is an integral part of school life and is well known in the locality for its high standard of singing. They sing at all school liturgies, school recognition days and on other occasions where dignitaries such as An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Mary Robinson and Mary McAlesse have visited the school. The choir are also involved in the wider life of the parish and often sing at funerals and weddings of those connected with the school. They have sung with St Muredach’s Cathedral choir and other prominent performers at fundraising concerts in the community.
St Mary’s Secondary school choir have been placed first for two successive years in the post-primary section of the Kiltimagh Choral festival.
They have also qualified on several occasions to compete in the regional finals of the RTE School Choir competition and have performed on RTE television as a result. The choir practice weekly after school.
Irish Traditional Music
There is a rich tradition of Irish traditional music in the area. St Mary’s have many fine Irish traditional musicians in the school who are prizewinners in the Fleadhanna competitions. They often perform individually and as a group at school events as well as joining the school choir on numerous occasions.
