Basketball has a proud and successful tradition at St. Mary's Secondary School, stretching back over four decades. The school currently fields teams at First Year, Second Year, Under-16 and Under-19 levels, giving students the opportunity to develop their skills, compete competitively and represent St. Mary's with pride.
During the 1990s, St. Mary's enjoyed All-Ireland success under the guidance of our late colleague Ms. Helen Tighe, whose dedication and passion for basketball left a lasting legacy in the school.
More recently, St. Mary's achieved outstanding national success, winning back-to-back First Year and Second Year All-Ireland titles in 2018 and 2019. Following these achievements, the school progressed to compete at B Grade level, reflecting the growing strength and standard of basketball in St. Mary's.
This exceptional team was also recognised by The Western People as Basketball Team of the Year 2019, a fitting tribute to their talent, commitment and achievements.
Basketball continues to thrive in St. Mary's, promoting teamwork, discipline, resilience and school spirit. Whether students are new to the sport or competing at a high level, they are encouraged to develop their confidence, enjoy the game and proudly represent their school.
