Year Heads

Supporting students through care, guidance and encouragement at St. Mary’s Secondary School.

At St. Mary's Secondary School, each year group is supported by a dedicated Year Head who plays a central role in the pastoral care and wellbeing of our students.

Our Year Heads work to build positive relationships with students, creating an environment where every young person feels known, valued and supported throughout their time in school. They are committed to helping students settle into school life, overcome challenges, celebrate achievements and reach their full potential.

Year Heads are available to students each morning before school and throughout the school day, providing guidance, encouragement and practical support whenever it is needed. They are often the first point of contact for students and parents regarding academic progress, attendance, wellbeing or any concerns that may arise.

As members of the school's Student Support Team, Year Heads work closely with senior management, Guidance Counsellors, the Chaplain, Special Educational Needs staff, class tutors, teachers, parents and external support agencies where appropriate. This collaborative approach ensures that students receive timely, coordinated and appropriate support.

While Year Heads promote the school's Code of Behaviour and encourage students to make positive choices, their primary role is one of support, guidance and encouragement. They work proactively with students to develop responsibility, resilience, self-confidence and respect for others, helping to foster a caring, inclusive and positive school community.

Above all, our Year Heads are committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, supported and encouraged to thrive both academically and personally throughout their journey at St. Mary's Secondary School.
