Young Social Innovators

The Transition Year Young Social Innovators (YSI) module encourages students to explore and respond creatively to the social issues shaping their lives, communities, and the wider world. Through this nationally recognised programme, students develop the confidence, empathy, and leadership skills needed to become active, informed citizens who can make a meaningful difference in society.

Each year, students investigate important contemporary issues and work collaboratively to develop projects that raise awareness, inspire discussion, and promote positive social change. Recent projects have focused on topics such as gender-based violence, the housing crisis, social inequality, mental health, inclusion, and sustainability, encouraging students to examine these complex challenges from multiple perspectives.

YSI places young people at the centre of learning and action. Students are encouraged to think critically, question injustice, and imagine a society that is more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable. They are supported to transform their ideas into practical initiatives that have a positive impact within the school and the wider community.

Participation in Young Social Innovators helps students develop valuable life skills, including teamwork, communication, leadership, research, problem-solving, and project management. Above all, it empowers them to recognise that, regardless of their age, they have the ability to influence change and contribute positively to the world around them.

St. Mary's has enjoyed significant success in the Young Social Innovators programme, with our students regularly presenting their projects at regional and national showcase events. Their creativity, commitment, and passion for social justice continue to demonstrate the values of compassion, inclusion, and active citizenship that are at the heart of our school community.
