The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a distinct, self-contained two-year Leaving Certificate programme designed to prepare students for adult life, further education, training and the world of work.
At St. Mary's Secondary School, the programme recognises the unique talents and abilities of every student, providing opportunities to develop confidence, independence, personal responsibility and practical life skills. LCA encourages students to learn by doing, applying their knowledge in real-life situations while building the skills needed for success beyond school.
Programme Structure
The two-year programme is divided into four half-year sessions, with students earning credits throughout each session as they successfully complete their coursework and assessments.
The programme is organised into three main areas:
Vocational Preparation
This area focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required for employment and further education.
Students study:
- Preparation for Work
- Work Experience
- Career Guidance
- Enterprise
- English and Communications
A key feature of the programme is weekly Work Experience every Friday throughout both years, allowing students to gain valuable workplace experience, build confidence and develop practical employment skills.
General Education
This area supports students' personal, social and creative development through subjects such as:
- Languages
- Leisure and Recreation
- Art
- Social Education
Vocational Education
Students develop practical and technical skills through courses including:
- Mathematical Applications
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- Vocational Skills Modules
Each course is divided into modules, with each module completed over a half-year period.
Vocational Specialisms
Students also choose two Vocational Specialisms, which provide practical, hands-on learning and industry-related experience.
At St. Mary's Secondary School, students study:
- Childcare and Community Care
- Hotel, Catering and Tourism
These courses equip students with valuable practical skills while preparing them for further education, apprenticeships and future employment opportunities.
Assessment
The Leaving Certificate Applied Programme uses a system of continuous assessment, recognising students' achievements throughout the two years rather than relying solely on final examinations.
Students earn credits through:
- Coursework and practical assignments
- Key Assignments
- Project Tasks
- SEC-sanctioned interviews
- Oral examinations
- Final written examinations
Students are also expected to maintain a minimum attendance rate of 90% throughout the programme in order to receive their full allocation of credits.
Final Written Examinations
Students complete written examinations in:

- Mathematical Applications
- Irish
- Modern Foreign Language
- Childcare and Community Care
- Hotel, Catering and Tourism
Certification
Students who successfully complete the programme are awarded the Leaving Certificate Applied by the Department of Education and Youth.
Awards are presented at three levels:
- Pass: 120–139 credits
- Merit: 140–169 credits
- Distinction: 170–200 credits
Students who achieve fewer than 120 credits, or who do not complete the full programme, receive a Record of Experience recognising the learning and skills they have achieved.
